![]() ![]() This book is such an original fantasy novel for Black boys and I cannot WAIT for readers to meet Alex Wise!. It's not often that a book can have me on the edge of my seat while rooting for a character to win. I found myself enraged, elated, fearful, and joyous, all while reading this book. Alex is such a character to root for: he is in tune with his emotions, he has the same problems other middle schoolers face, he doesn't understand the magic-literally and figuratively-within him, and he learns to face his fears through his own process of understanding himself, his sister, and his parents. Perry was previously a teacher and started writing for children so that Black boys, like his students and the boy he once.
