In London, Marx soon went to work in collecting and sifting through the existing material of the classical economists. He saw his main responsibility as being to uncover the mysteries of capitalism. Marx arrived in London in late autumn 1849, beginning what turned out to be a life-long exile. The first volume of Capital was eventually finished after many delays in the autumn of 1867, although the remaining volumes were not published until after his death.
